Tourism Cares Hall of Fame Dinner
On August 8, 2007, with more than 350 of their friends, family and travel industry colleagues from around the world in attendance, Daniel Sullivan, Jr., President of Collette Vacations - along with his late father and former Chairman of the Board at Collette Vacations, Dan Sullivan, Sr. - was inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who, among other business accomplishments, have made significant contributions to the travel and tourism industry through philanthropic, volunteer and mentoring activities.
Collette's involvement with Tourism Cares began in 2002 when Dan Sullivan, Jr. was serving on the board of Travelers Conservation Foundation (TCF) and was a leading force behind a collaborative effort to develop the concept of a "give back" public service program. Dan envisioned that this idea would be embraced, not by just one company or association, but by the entire tourism industry. The Travelers Conservation Foundation created Tourism Cares, a foundation with a mission to bring the tourism industry together to help restore the world's natural, cultural and historic treasures that are in need of care and rejuvenation through volunteer efforts.
Every year, Collette sends a group of its employees to participate in the annual Tourism Cares event. In past years, these projects have included restoring the famed above-ground cemeteries of New Orleans and cleaning up the National Park site at historic Ellis Island. In the spring of 2008, Tourism Cares will renew its dedication to the Gulf Coast restoration effort by bringing its annual clean-up event to New Orleans to help resurrect the Louis Armstrong Park from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
"The Sullivans join an elite group of honorees in the Hall of Fame," said Bruce Beckham, executive director of Tourism Cares. "The personal values set forth by Dan Sullivan, Sr. have been carried on and amplified by his son, Dan, Jr." The black tie gala dinner and induction ceremony was held at the Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville, CT and celebrated the achievements of these two distinguished gentlemen.
Dan Sullivan, Jr., in carrying on the legacy of his father, is an avid supporter of numerous local and national philanthropic organizations including the Boys and Girls Clubs and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Dan is also the Co-Chairman of the Pawtucket Foundation, an organization committed to the continued economic development of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Collette's home city.
The fact that these two men have led by example was illustrated by the number of Collette employees in attendance. "I have a lot of respect for both of these men and felt compelled to attend as a way of honoring their leadership, dedication and philanthropy," explained Peter Hopps, manager of Guest Relations. "I feel proud to work for a company that cares." The Hall of Fame Dinner, with the support of the event sponsors, raised more than $100,000 for the programs and services provided by Tourism Cares.
